1999 Bordeaux Futures
Of Course, these wines have now been delivered and are no longer
for sale as futures. But we will be preserving this site so that those who
are interested can compare the present retail pricing for these wines with their
value at the time of its future offering. Such comparisons can be
informative and illustrate the value of participating in Bordeaux futures
offerings.
An Analysis of Conditions at September 2000:
Kreston's
normally has it's offering of futures published by this time in the year, but
1999 offers a vintage with the confluence of a set of circumstances that has us
waiting in the wings for the moment. First is the quality of the
vintage. As Robert Parker has stated in his Wine Advocate
#128 of April of this year, it was "A wet, hot, and irregular year."
1999 was problematic for many appellations in Bordeaux, most notably St.
Estephe, because of the nearly 6 inches of rain that fell in September prior to
harvest. The result is many diluted and thin offerings from this usually most
masculine and hearty of the Bordeaux communes. In the other appellations, wines
quite worthy of consideration were produced, but care needs to be taken in their
selection.

That said, the second
consideration that has us dragging our feet at present is the current state of
the Bordeaux wine industry. The extraordinary price levels of the last three
vintages has diluted demand to the point that a firming up of prices that has
usually occurred long before now is in a state of flux, and prudent retailers
are playing a waiting game at the moment expecting some softening to occur. We
count ourselves among this group of those that are taking a "wait and
see" attitude at the moment. Of course we run the risk of being shut out if
our gut feelings prove to be unwarranted. But, after having played this game for
over twenty vintages, never before have we felt this comfortable with taking
this slow and easy attitude.
And lastly there is the current state of currency
exchange rates, getting more favorable every day as the dollar gets ever more
strong against the French franc. This also places downward pressure on prices
and is more reason to adopt this "wait and see" attitude for the
present time.
We have locked in a very few favorites
from this vintage; wines that have excelled in the winemaker's art and we
present them below. Rest assured that this logjam will break, and the selection
will expand as Winter draws nearer. The result will undoubtedly be better prices
for you. So our advice is for you to wait along with us until the dust clears a
bit and the conditions described above flesh themselves out a little better.
