__________________________________________________________
People
frequently ask me, "Joe, why are you so enamored of French Wines??
Such an absolute FREAK for them??" Well, I guess it stems from my
long history in this business; pushing 32 years soon. And "old"
hands like myself and Don Kreston have literally watched (and hopefully
have had some small hand in) the birth and growth of this wine industry
in the U.S. Because when I first came into this business in the
early 70's the largest selling wine in America was Cream Sherry in
gallon jugs!! People rarely even knew what a Chardonnay or a
Cabernet was. And the distinguished people who taught me the ins
and outs of this business were Francophiles and I became a Francophile
too.
Not
that I don't enjoy a good bottle of American wine, I do. But my
heart lies in Europe. And in that vein, I've discovered for you
four fabulous whites from Alsace that are perfect choices to grace your
table or for sipping alone with a bit of cheese and fruit and the
company of good friends and family. Give them a try. I think
you'll enjoy them.
Coming
from the Estates of
Emile Boeckel,
the first is his
2001 Gewürztraminer,
always my choice for matching to the traditional-styled cuisines of the
Winter. Spicy in flavor, it melds perfectly with Turkey and
stuffing and sweet potatoes; or with a great Ham or fine Pork
loin. This one's got a bouquet of flowers and spice-box, leading
directly to flavors of spice, rose petals and pears in a crisp,
medium-bodied package. It is FABULOUS and the most expensive of
this quartet of fine wines with a
regular price of
$14.99 and
featured here
at a most reasonable
$11.99
per bottle.
I've tried it and I LIKE it a bunch and think you will also.
The
next three offerings,
all regularly priced
at $11.99 and
featured
through the Holidays at only
$9.99,
are all perfect aperitifs and also perfect matches to lighter cuisines.
The Emile
Boeckel 2001 Pinot Blanc
is superb and strikes an ideal balance of ripe, juicy fruit, mineral
intensity and crunchy acidity. This could be the perfect
all-purpose white for year-round enjoyment.
The Emile
Boeckel 2001 Tokay Pinot Gris
is ripe with stone, smoke and white peach aromas and flavors. And
a rich, viscous mouthfeel with a long, concentrated finish. It is
DELICIOUS and an easy drinking wine whose glass begs "fill me again!"
Lastly, the
Emile Boeckel 2001 Riesling Brandluft
is French Riesling through and through! And that means dry,
light-bodied and full of delicate fruit. Great with rich fish or
pork, it's flavors of green apples and peach gain in intensity with
repeated tasting. It is DELIGHTFUL and a genuine crowd pleaser
whether alone or with your favorite cheeses or matched to more complex
cuisines.
Need some diversity in your cellar?? You can get
three bottles of
each of these
four wonderful
Emile Boeckel
Alstatian whites
in a mixed
case for
only $118!
It will
provide a great selection of whites on the dinner table and makes a
terrific introduction to the diverse and delicious wines of Alsace.
I've enjoyed them immensely and believe you will too.
'Till
next time, raise a glass for me!
